I just bought a house and there were 3 or 4 of these toledo torches in the shed. I believe they were used as road flares. Can anyone tell me about them and if they are of any value.

"Smudge pots" is what they were called where I grew up. I remember seeing them at night on road construction sites along the highway. They might also have been used in crop fields to ward off spring freezes, but look a little small for that job, no?

these are really great little items! smudge pots make very nice garden torches to place on steps in the garden.
