I stumbled across this site and I'm so glad i did!

I found this trunk at our swap shop at the local dump with the immediate idea of chalk painting it. After finding this site I'm curious what people think... From what I've read, I think it's embossed metal (zinc) that was later painted blue. I peeled off contact paper that someone had applied to the inside. Latch says patd oct 28 1868. I wasn't able to find any labels or company markings.

    Thanks for any input!

Glad you recognized this as a zinc trunk -- I have the same one except the zinc is not embossed -- I will post mine so you can see how nice the zinc is -- paint is easy to remove with a chemical paint remover -- just a bit messy. Totally worth the refinishing.... welcome to Collector's Weekly -- a great site indeed!!

What a GREAT trunk!!! You'll most definitely have to post the pics of the finished product when you've completed it. Can't wait to see what it looks like with all of that blue paint removed.

@trunkman & @jscotto363 - thank you both for taking a look and sharing your thoughts. Sounds like a big project but good to know it has potential!
