This type of helmet was worn by German troops in warm climate areas such as Africa, Italy, etc. This version was made for German navy use because the interior is green, whereas army and air force helmet interiors were red. It was intended for proctection from the sun, not projectiles, falling debris, etc. The pictures show this type of helmet in use. The group photo is an original photo from a crew member of U 459 which was a German supply submarine which was sunk by two British aircraft in 1943 with the loss of 18 crew members.
