We have this Federalist desk with tambor doors that has been in my wife's family for generations. It was made by Thomas Needham, Sr. or Jr. in Salem about 1800. The original label is still present in the top drawer.

The last generation spoke of a concealed compartment in the desk which contains papers about the origin of the desk. However, none of the present generation knows where it is and we have not been successful in finding it. Anyone have an answer for us? Any information is appreciated.

Looking at other desks with secret compartments its look like any ornamentation could possibly pull straight out. Or in the drawers a possible false bottom. Some may even have a keyhole on the underside or back. There has even been a drawer behind a drawer.
