I got this button in a small bottle of buttons at a yard sale in Santa Fe, NM. The applied escutcheon looks to me like the coat of arms of Maximilian I of Mexico (2nd Mexican Empire, 1864-1867). The motto reads "Equidad en la Justicia". The button is domed and measures 7/8" in diameter. It has a nice sturdy brass loop shank. The back mark reads "Warranted Extra Fein". I am no expert on uniform buttons, and would be amazed to have found one from the short, weird reign of Maximilian I in Mexico. Does anyone have any information about this button?

Wow. It certainly does look like Maximilian's coat of arms! I don't know about Mexican buttons, but construction seems right for military buttons of the time. The back mark appears to be European manufacture, and that also makes sense considering the Empire's ties with Europe. I can't imagine someone reproducing such an obscure item, so I think you probably do have a rarity! Congratulations!

Thanks for your reply. I also thought that the German back mark and Maximilian's Austrian origins seemed right.
