I just purchased this from a friend who found it at a flea market... It's in good condition, but the labels and stencilled initials (W.R.O.B.) have been painted over so I can't identify where it was made or who the manufacturer was. The lock is an Excelsior 5953. It seems to have all the original fabric, hardware, drawers, hangers, and handles, though the brass plating is quite badly tarnished and the lock is broken / key is missing. The canvas (or possibly vellum?) cover is in decent shape; it's scuffed and has a couple of small gouges, but is mostly intact. There are eight hangers included, all rather dirty but in perfect condition. It was purchased in Moncton, NB, Canada. Dimensions are 40" x 22.5" x 21". I'd love to get some information / educated guesses as to the provenance and approximate age of the piece, if anyone has seen something similar with the labels intact.

1920's to 30's wardrobe trunk as you have already surmised... covered in vulcanized fiber. With no label its hard to know who made it as there were many companies at the time cranking these old behemoths out. Fun piece... I have a couple about the house... one has Indiana Jones paraphernalia tucked away inside. Yours may be missing a bottom pull out suitcase thingy they sometimes have.
