I found this in a field in North Carolina several years ago. I have searched for something similar to compare it to but have had no luck. Maybe a hitch pin for farm equipment? It's very heavy, iron, no makers mark or identifier that I can see. Looks to be hand forged. Any help in satisfying my curiosity would be greatly appreciated!

      Got me! Maybe a lynch-pin for a buggy/wagon wheel?

i've found hundreds of these around the railroad tracks near my house. it's something to do w/ the railroad, but not sure what.

Thanks to you both! Clues from each helped so much! Discovered it's an old railroad anchor. Mystery solved!

To ho2cultcha: evidently they can be repurposed as door pulls. Found a site that sells them for $20 each. If you've found hundreds.... :)

Railroad anchor? Would that be fresh water or salt?
