Antique WW1 Era Japan Sephia Photographs??

I have a large number of photos that were taken from a soldier that served during the Russian civil war. After the war he traveled to Japan and China and took numerous photos. These photos I have here are different they appear to on a type of paper and Sephia like In color. The soldier signed and described them on back most were taken early 1920s. I was hoping someone could tell me what kind of photos these are. Most are 5 1/2 inches wide by 3 1/4 inches tall.
