Very interesting pin, I hadn't seen one before and thought it was a very nice piece ,a friend told me it was a pin that protects you on your travels much like wearing a cross that it is suppose to keep you safe
Your friend is correct - this is an image of St Christopher carrying the child Christ across a river, who then became considered as protector of travelers. People would put on a medal or pin with his image when starting on a long journey.
