      It is a Singer model 185 J machine . You can just google " Dating a Singer Sewing machine ." Go to the official Singer sight and you can find the year your machine was made by looking for the serial number on the Singer web site .

      does 1954 sound about right

      If it's a 185 the serial number will be underneath - tip the machine back and look under the edge.
