Helping my mother-in-law do some research on old items given to her by her mother. Plate is approximately 7" in diameter. Would it have been a stand-alone piece or part of a pattern produced on a larger scale? Thanks in advance for any clues!

There's a soft spot in my heart for gold on white Nippon. Yes, this is probably part of a set of dishes for meals. I can't imagine putting anything on them but pretty plates like these weren't expensive, although compared to wages back then they may have been. This may have been a a cake plate; in one of Ms. Van Patten's books she includes a cake set the has a large plate for the cake and smaller plates for servings. The size of the smaller dishes was 6 and 1/4". I would think putting only cake on the center gold wouldn't damage it as long as you were careful with your fork. Yours is so pretty and perfect it was perhaps an extra "in case something gets broken" plate.
