Vintage Painted Paper Dress likely from Greenwich Village. Beatnik or Hippie.

This is a fascinating piece, which I need a fashion expert's opinion to lock down the particulars. I purchased this from a NYC Thrift Shop that gets items from throughout the East Side (including the Village) of the city for Jewish relief. Therefore the individual history is gone. I acquired it as a OOAK 1960s Hippie garment, which I still think it may be - but when i handled it and looked at the piping and the darkened material - I couldn't help but wonder if it was earlier - more late 50s to early 60s and the beatnik era... The flower power notwithstanding. Certainly was created by a free spirit whom I would have loved to have talked to.
