Wondering what this wood item is

Found at an estate sale, made of wood, measures about 6” h x 3” around. Was this used for anything specific or is it just a decorative wood item.

I have 3 or 4 of these in different lengths and diameters. I believe they belonged to my late wife's grandmother. The ones I have contain needles. Larger ones for felting & knitting needles and smaller ones for sewing machine needles. I have no idea what they are called but they have needles in them and are marked accordingly.
