I have an ammunition box for the water cooled M1917 browning machine gun. It is of WWI vintage and has been passed down through our family. Unfortunately, it's history has been lost and now I am trying to find out if the handwriting on the sides means anything related to the war or if it is a post-war artifact. Thank you for your help!

Doesn't look like a wartime marking to me.

Probably denotes post- war storage of something that started with a "D".
