I know it's from the mid 70s but I dont understand why the table top flips!? Did this table have a mirror at some point or was it for easier storage?

I see this style of table typically referred to as a tilt top tea table or candle stand; depending on the size. They tilt so that they can be less obtrusive when not in use.

The Bombay Company sold a table like this in the '80s. Flips to minimize storage footprint.
