Frank O. Hamilton (1923-2015), a San Francisco philanthropist and abstract painter whose exuberantly colored pictographic shapes and forms brought Miró and medieval maps to mind. Initially working in ceramics in the 1950s before teaching himself to paint, his acrylic paintings are in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Oakland Museum and other institutions. Solo exhibitions of his ceramics included one man shows at the Legion of Honor Museum and Gump’s Gallery in San Francisco in addition to those in New York, Texas, and Massachusetts.
