I found these at a local antique shop. I have discovered that the original ones were made out of sugar. These are made from clay and hand painted. The owner of the shop purchased them in Mexico. The last photo shows the skulls in the shop.
From the internet:
Sugar skulls, also called calaverites de Azucar (or calaverites, for short), are literally skulls made from sugar. They’re found in Mexico and Mexican households for the Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos tradition, which takes place annually on the evening of November 1 through the next day.
Attention: If I don't respond, it is because I am having a lot of difficulty getting on this site. I also no longer get emails telling me whenever someone has commented on a post. I have emailed "Collectors Weekly" numerous times regarding the issue, but have had no response (???)

Beautiful Day of Dead sugar skulls & great history, it's a holiday that's always fascinated me
