This "Napoleon" Howitzer stands about 23" long, bbl. made from steel, bore is 3/4" in diameter. It fires a charge of black powder.
It is a precise replica of a field cannon that was used both by the Union Troops and the Confederate Troops during the civil war. More Napoleons were used than any other artillery during the war. Most were made from a bronze alloy, while a few were made from iron.
I load this cannon with 100 grains of 2 F black powder. The powder is rolled into an aluminum slug and rammed down the bbl. A wad of damp newspaper is then rammed down the bbl. and a brass pricker is pushed down the fuse hole to open the path for the fuse. A fuse is then inserted. It is now ready to fire. (I never fired a projectile).
The full-sized Civil War Napoleon Howitzer fired an exploding shell for over 1600 hundred yards, and if the enemy was close enough, they used "canister" which held about 75 iron balls 3/4" in dia. Canister shot could wipe out a 50 yd. line of enemy 400 yards away. The Napoleon was a most devastating and effective artillery smooth bore howitzer that both sides used.

This would look great on my deck.
