      Hi, Archie3 :-)

I'm no expert, but I suspect dav2no1 is right about your dime having been damaged by a clothes dryer.

In case you don't know how that could happen:

      https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?topic_id=143863

What is your damaged dime worth? Probably ten cents tops.

You could try taking it back to the store where you received it as change in a transaction, and getting it redeemed.

You wouldn't have solid proof that the store gave it to you, but the manager might redeem it as a public relations goodwill gesture.

You could try surreptitiously passing it on in another transaction, but aside from any ethical concerns, even if you succeed, you may have solved the problem for yourself personally, but not solved the problem in the big picture.

You could try taking it to a coin dealer.

One of them might pay you for it, and use it to mount an educational display for their customers; however, I suspect all of them have seen more than their share of dryer-damaged coins.

Your could take it to a local bank, and see it they'll redeem it:

Failing that, you could try the Bureau of Engraving and Printing
Mutilated Currency Division, but that would cost you more than ten cents:

      https://www.frbservices.org/resources/financial-services/cash/exception-processing/mutilated-currency

Really, if you consider your time valuable, any action other than tossing out the damaged dime will probably cost you more than ten cents.
