Peter Callas (American, b. 1951) Studio Pottery/Sculpture (US)

Peter Callas (American, b. 1951) is a wood fire ceramicist specializing in the anagama kiln. He received a BFA from the University of Puget Sound located in Tacoma, Washington in the early 1970's. Later on he was an artist in residence at the Archie Bray Foundation where he shared a studio with Peter Voulkos, beginning a life-long friendship. Subsequently, he travelled through Japan, meeting many potters including Hamada Shoji, and assisted in the building of a wood-fired anagama kiln. On his return, he built the first anagama in the United States in 1975, and began to fire for Peter Voulkos, as well as his own work, a collaboration that lasted through to the 1990s.
