    IM AT A LOSS WITH THIS ITEM//im sure it can be used by many feilds of work-but why lang"-is written on it?I think thats a fair question--plus any other info would be great!! thanks a bunch for anyone that has the know!! I like the way it folds up--very cool item! thanks c/dogg& rug ratts

      The engraving is in French. Demi pied nelle mesure = Half Foot Measurement; Ligne Aplomb = Plumb Line

      hi cody, this is an astronomy item , you can see more details here, the mesurement in "feets" was used in france befor the 1789 revolution and prohibited in1793, switched to "meters"
