I purchased this small wooden box a few weeks ago in an antiques store in Lancaster PA. It is approx 8" by 3" by 3". It has a small clasp to close it. When you open it it folds out perfectly flat. Inside are metal things, that are numbered.

I am guessing it is sometype of toolbox. The inscription on the top reads Patented 189? and I think February 18?.

anyone have any idea what this might be?

    Thanks for your help.

It's a Singer sewing machine attachments box. I have one listed here, and there are a few others. Called a puzzle box, came filled with sewing machine attachments. They're cool ;)

That type of puzzle box was for the model 27 - there were a couple of different types. The thing that tells me it was for a 27 (vibrating shuttle or long bobbin machine) is the 'ladder' shaped metal piece which was the holder for spare bobbins. The type for the IF or later 15 machines, had a long spike for putting round bobbins onto.
