This is an original Salesman's Demonstrator for a multi-use gate that can be ratcheted up to allow small animals to pass under, opened at various degrees to limit access, and pivot in the middle to allow the gate to be opened on one side of the gate posts and closed on the other side.

Patented by John W. Putt, of Nine Mile, Indiana, Patent #570,714 on November 3, 1896.
