This was found in a root cellar of an old home which was built in 1902. Western Electric is on the front of the heavy cast iron casing. The number 336 is on the inside of the casing. There is no dial, just a small crank, and someone wrote in chalk to "Keep this locked at all times." Can anyone tell me anything about this phone?

Western Electric model 336/1136 mine phone manufactured from 1910 to 1948. used in coal mines, railroad stations, engine rooms. since no dial worked behind a manual switchboard or station to station.

I have the same phone. It has a cloth covered wire to the ear piece and the steel mounting plate is still on the back. It also has a typed directory pasted inside the door which indicates it was a "Gas Company Private Line" with 18 connections, all of which appear to be different offices, in different cities or towns.

Tom my husband has found this phone in a local old mining town, he's anxiously trying to find out more about it. Are you able to share any more information?
