Imperial German Reservist's stein of Hornist Sehlund, 123rd Grenadier Regiment

This is an exceptionally beautiful beer stein with wonderfully vibrant colors. It has the pewter lid with two soldiers. One placing a victory wreath over the head of another. The thumblift is a sparrow, or wren. The bird is associated with the "The Legend of Die Ulmer Spätze". The stein has various military scenes and much hand finishing. It belonged to a reservist by the name of Sehlund who was one of two company Hornifts (Trumpeters). His name and the names of his comrades are on the roster that appears on each side of the handle. Sehlund served in the 5th company of the 123rd Wurttemberg Grenadier Regiment garrisoned in Ulm from 1905-1907. Four scenes of camp life at the garrison decorate each side of the central theme that shows a view of the city of Ulm. Soldiers, shields, epaulettes, helmets, bugle, drum, and a crest picture of King Karl taken from an actual photograph. The lithophane has the typical soldier and maiden scene as she bids him farewell as he goes off to his service. The saying at the top of the stein translates to “We serve by the Danube for two years of faithful service to the Fatherland”. At the bottom are the words (translated)”In memory of my time in the service”. Measures almost a foot high and is in beautiful condition.
