This is an AC Gilbert American Flyer manufactured in my hometown,New Haven Ct. I believe the serial # is stamped on the underside of the tender which is F-9489.
The train came from my mother's side of the family and I always remember it being stored in a closet untill I took it and started to display it in my room when I was about 13. My mother had no idea what happened to the rest of the set.
It still runs like a champ the light comes on and it will blow smoke.

You threw me. I have never seen an AC Gilbert American Flyer Hudson (4-6-4) with the cab number 443. But then, the photo didn't look quite right, either. The boiler was wrong, linkage was missing, and there was no oval New York Central herald on the tender. Then it dawned on me -- what you have is not the more common American Flyer S-gauge (1:64 scale), but an American Flyer HO-gauge (1:87 scale) Hudson. It was manufactured in 1955. The poor thing could use a good cleaning, but be careful! And, if it smokes, don't let the wick run dry -- add a few drops of smoke fluid down the stack. There are many individuals and companies who can help bring it back to its former glory. Check out places such as Port Line Hobby, RF Giardina, or Leventon Hobby.
