X-Men action figures are based on characters from the Jack Kirby and Stan Lee Marvel comic, first published in September of 1963. Despite its enduring publishing history, X-Men action figures were not released until 1991, when Toy Biz (the company now called Marvel Toys) produced the first nine figures in the "Uncanny X-Men" series—Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, Archangel, Nightcrawler, Apocalypse, Juggernaut, Colossus, and Magneto. Following the line’s success, Toy Biz quickly released another series of figures known as “X-Force.”
That same year, Toy Biz created “talking” figure versions for Wolverine, Cyclops, and Magneto, which came wearing backpacks with three buttons corresponding to different phrases or sounds. Throughout the 1990s, two or more series of X-men action figures were released each year, with Series IV from 1993 becoming the top-selling line. Subsequent releases included favorite characters like Gambit, Iceman, Banshee, Forge, Sabretooth, Professor X, and Rogue.
Besides action figures, X-men toys included accessories like light-up weaponry and vehicles, as well as playsets featuring settings from the television and film series. More recently, licensed X-men action figures have also been made by major toy companies like Hasbro and LEGO.
