Yes, it does look like the circular knitting gadget for casting on socks etc. I noticed today that the hooked prongs were shaped and pointed at the ends (which would be needed for knitting.)

Yes I think you could be right about the stove pipe because it's smaller than the one on eBay. I should have mentioned that it measures 2inches diameter closed and goes up to 5 inches when fully open....
