      it's a cobblers hammer from the 1930's or 1940's

Most certainly a cobblers hammer. I am pleased there is someone else who agrees, it's hell being old alone. This one is well used which adds to it's history. Pretty common but they came in different sizes and designs so research it carefully.

      Hi okeeffe294,
I see this an old thread and the nature of the hammer has already been pointed out. If you are still interested in further details, this is a Crispin-style cordwainer's/cobblers hammer. The patterned face is there to prevent slipping across the tack head during tacking/lasting of a hand-made shoe. The flat linear face at the opposite end is used as an iron or for rubbing seams e.t.c. This looks to be a union USMC or Whitcher model, but without a makers mark you couldn't say for sure as this style (while classic) is still produced today. Hope this helps.
