Hoping a military button collector can fill in some of the details about these buttons. I found a card of 6 buttons at a thrift store with a handwritten label "c.1870 Silverplate Uniform Buttons". Size is 1 1/8" diameter. The mark on the back is TW&W Paris. I understand this to be Trelon, Weldon & Weil. With the stamp Paris, is the label correct that the latest these could have been manufactured is 1870? Would anyone know what kind of uniform these would have come from? If the C is not for a particular organization but is a monogram, would monogram buttons like these be made to order or mass produced? I am thinking of selling them, perhaps keeping one or 2 for my own collection. What would be the value? Would I be making a mistake to split them up? Should I clean them or leave them as is (I love shiny silver, myself)? Any help would be appreciated as my button reference books have been no help.

I wish I could provide more help, but I believe you are looking at the letter upside down and it's actually a gothic "C" Google images for gothic letters and I think you'll agree.

A C?! Never occurred to me because they are all on the card in the direction I posted. You may be right. Off to google gothic Cs. Thanks.

Chrisnp, you are correct - SO embarassingly obvious to me now! I've changed the direction of the picture and edited my text after your kind assistance.
