Searching old stone foundations circa 1820s and my metal detector found this iron tool about 4 inches below surface inside a 10x10 foot stone foundation in eastern Ontario south of Ottawa. Any idea what it is and what it was used for? It is about 18 inches long, 3 inches wide and weighs about 7 lbs. Part of the side of the scoop is broken but otherwise in good shape.

You're getting close to the French, so there is no telling! Maybe a"Que-becker" can ID it?

Appears to be a mounting bracket of some sort.

Possibly for a gate or shutter hinge.

Good point re a mounting bracket. It is pretty heavy so maybe a part off a cast iron stove?
