    I found this 3oz ball jar this weekend don't know much about it. I read that it was from a child jelly set made in the 50s. Does anyone know anymore about this jar.

      Nothing to do with "child" - This is a "jelly jar" - just a smaller size canning jar mainly used for fruit-based jellies and preserves -- The Ball logo dates it to between 1933-1960. - The lid is from a different brand maker named BerNarDin and dates circa 1950's (the 63 on the lid is not the year but actually denotes the mouth size of the jar it fits - 63mm)

      Agree with Riply wholeheartedly - if it isn't embossed on the other side with oz. measurements it is considered a 1/4 pint or 4 oz size - this may in fact be a "spice jar" - Ball made these (and still do) with a plastic lid with a shaker type feature;

      It will only hold 3 oz of water that's why I think it is a 3oz jar

      So is there a way of knowing if it's a 3 oz or a 4 oz.

      Is there anyway to tell how old it is

      the 3 oz. size seem odd to me as well; possibly a special run for spices. Generally canners do use liquid measure, which corresponds with canning jars typically marketed as quart, 1/2 quart and 1/4 quart. I even have a Ball 1/2 quart size with liquid measures marked along the side. Many canners use the 1/4 quart (1 cup or 8 oz.) for jellies; but there are also 4 oz. jelly jars. FWIW, the spice company where I often buy spices offers their spices in small jars; even tho' the spice is by weight the jar size is always mentioned in liquid measure.

      The jar that I have will fit in a 1/4 jelly jar so that is why I think it is a 1/3 jar. I will take a pictures of it tomorrow next to the 1/4 jar.

      compare the size/measurements of your jar with this link noted as midget jar:

      I'm guessing that this would be a HTF jar that had a limited production.

      My wife found the jelly making kit without the jar. Would like to find three more to complete the set. I think it came with 4 jars
