    Christ on the Cross
In this 17th century Flemish painting, the artist has isolated the image of Christ on the cross against the darkness, which followed Jesus' crucifixion from noon until 3pm (Mt 27:45-46). Jesus dying on the cross for the sins of the world is a demonstration of Jesus' perfect love that did not seek its own, but the will of the Father (1 Cor 13:4-8), and of God's great love towards people. On the cross God provided a sacrifice for sin, so that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16).
