This item has been floating around my family for many years, but we know nothing about it. It has impressions on the sides: W.D.& Co. pat Mar 3 1874 / Patented July 20th 1875. It obviously had a screw in bowl at one time.
Can anyone tell me anything? Value would be appreciated, as well as any historical info.

I thank everyone for their comments and info. The pipe appears to be made of Bakelite - we tested for the yellow color. I had forgotten about finding patents on Google, so thanks for the link. The only thing I do not know is: can the bowl be replaced and its approximate value. I'm sure it isn't much, but it would be interesting to have some idea.
