Smaller than a dime, this button was found in Athens GA. It appears handmade, very old, possibly brass or some other metal painted gold. Looking to identify origin of this unique artifact, possibly military or civil war era?

The design is a fleur de lis.

"The fleur-de-lis or fleur-de-lys (plural: fleurs-de-lis) [pron 1] is a stylized lily (in French, fleur means "flower", and lis means "lily") or iris that is used as a decorative design or symbol."

Buttons can normally be dated by their shanks. Maybe there is some info here to help you. You can always email Carol, who owns the page:

I only know this flower is a symbol of royalty here in Spain
