Found in basement of old house. Very , very large. Tall and has insert inside that is odd material, like plastic but I know it hadn't been made yet? Lovely hardware missing nothing and in great condition considering it sat in a basement forever. Green markings add to the great patina. Let me know what I have please.

You can post 4 pics. Post one of the insert & the interior. Give measurements. What do the green markings say? If you need to post more than 4 pics, post a second listing with additional pics.

You have a Vulcanized Fiber covered sample trunk from the early 1900's. These durable trunks were used by traveling salesmen to showcase their wares, such as jewelry, cloth, buttons, carpet, household items, etc. pretty much everything.

Two of the main manufacturers of this style of trunk come to mind (There were many others of course and without a label hard to be sure) were The Leatheroid manufacturing co. of Kennebunk Maine.(Boston, Ny., Phila.)They used this particular lock extensively as well as the corner hardware. They also numbered most of their trunks for warranty reasons. The other manufacturer that comes to mind is William Bal inc. of NY.both specialized in professional trunks.Much luck and thanks for the post.
