Very high quality, "Lufkin" brand stainless steel tape. I brought it from from Wyoming, If you can see it is graduated in 10ths of a foot. guess what it is used for.

I think engineers use this graduation but I don't know why.
Typically sold as a well tape, it can be used to measure the depth of any hole or long vertical drop. It needs to have a plumb bob at its end and the bob is usually about 4" long and marked with those increments. The tape's markings then start where the bob's markings leave off.
It was used to measure the depth of grain in tall grain elevators. It's easier to measure the volume of a bin and the number of bushels of grain within if measured in tenths of a foot.
Thanks for all the replies, This one may be from the oil field. Used as s stated by previous replies and may also be used for measuring oil in storage tanks, depth of wells and length of drill pipe. I believe the "decimal foot makes engineering & math easier when transferred to calculator..
