    My thinking is this must be some sort of tool holder for pencils/pens or paint brushes, but I have a feeling some of you folks will tell me what it was really used for. I appreciate if you could help me here on identifying this simple little wooden object.

      I will post a link below for you to look at. I believe it is a variation of what you have. Checking the hole diameter would confirm. Way back long ago ink pens weren't used in the lower grades at school, only pencils. The teacher would have a pencil tree on her desk so you could have a pencil to use. The one shown in the link below is the shape of an apple for the teachers desk.
