Found in my father-in-law’s archive of World War II memorabilia, I’m posting two of his war stories. The first story is quite humorous and he found it in a Manila army newspaper and related it in a letter to his wife in the summer of 1945. It’s headline: “OOPS!” The second story is not humorous but rather amazing and describes the realities of war and he wrote it in a post-war anecdote in January, 1946. Warning: the second story is somewhat graphic and not for the faint of heart. As a kid, my husband often heard the story about the unfortunate Japanese soldier, but he never once heard the story about the bulges that were mistaken as grenades.
