    R.I.P. Mr. Watson the horse

Mr. Watson left tonight for the big pasture in the sky. The vet was there and gave him a shot. In a few minutes he was gone. Mr. Watson was my neighbor's horse that lived in the pasture behind me. He was a pet and lived a good long life. I've known him since he was a colt over 20 years ago. He was friendly and all the neighbors that his fence touched, gave him treats.

I fed him a few carrots almost daily. I was lucky to have a couple carrots left today and as usual, he came to the fence and neighed signaling he wanted some carrots. Lately he lost all his weight and his neigh wasn't as loud or as long as it used to be. He could barely chomp the carrots which I cut into thin pieces for him. The two female goats, Thelma and Louise will miss him too. They were never but a few steps away wherever he roamed.

Anytime I wondered if it was going to start raining, all I had to do was glance into the pasture. If Mr. Watson was standing in the barn, you could guarantee it was going to start soon. He was very accurate with his weather predictions. (Top right insert of second picture)

Sometimes he would come to the fence and just watch while I played frisbee with the dogs.

A few pictures of when he was a young colt. He had a traffic cone and he would run back and forth throwing it in the air or with it hanging out of his mouth just having a blast. It was quite amusing.

Earlier today there was a westward breeze and this strange cloud drifted quickly towards my house over the pasture. I snapped a few pictures because I thought it looked like a herd of horses.

A horse is a horse..Of course, of course
But this horse, was also my friend
He listened to all my thoughts while eating his carrots
And he never left till the end...

So sad to have a loving animal pass away.... even if it's your neighbors or friends.
It appears that Mr. Watson had a great life :)

Dav2no1, I’m so sorry for your loss of Mr Watson.
The picture of his “final goodbye” , along with his herd, is very touching.

Thank you all for the loves and comments. I knew it was coming, but in the reality of the moment it was tough. He was a really good listener and never told anyone our secrets.

It will be strange to not see him out there in the pasture. Time is cruel and it's just another reminder of our own mortality. At least I got to feed him his carrots and see him on his way.

I’m touched by this, even brought a tear to my eye. And you’re a wonderful storyteller. Did you ever think about writing? I was interested from the first word to the last,
Thank you and blessings to Mr. Watson, a character I won’t forget.

Budek - Thank you for your kind comments. I still find myself glancing at the field to see if Mr. Watson is there..The goats are a little more timid without him around. I've fed them some carrots a few times. They spend a lot more time hanging near their barn now. They do come to my fence once in awhile.

dav2no1, It's going to take time for you to stop missing your confidant Mr. Watson. :-(

As to the goats, I have no doubt that they miss his reassuring presence. Goats, with their letterbox eyes, are essentially prey animals:

      https://redwoodhill.com/stories/why-do-goats-have-rectangular-pupils

Not that horses aren't also prey animals, but they're more formidable targets than goats, and can assume a protective role in a shared pasture.

The goat babies miss their knight.
