I bought these chairs because they are cool. Tried many web sites & antique dealers to identify these pieces. No luck. Anyone out there know anything about these? I am interested in getting them re-upholstered, but would like info on them first.
From my experience, I would think these are probably european. Possibly Belgian or English. They are oak. A fairly expensive undertaking to have refinished, recaned and reupholstered. If you stick to the original materials it should be worth it. You will have solid chairs that should outlast you. If at all possible try to preserve and reuse the original brass tacks.
I would call these Morris chairs.
The general style began in the late 19th century, with height of popularity during the first quarter of the 20th century. Reproductions are made today.
Your chairs look to be at the very tail end of production. The chairs show an Arts & Crafts influence, but the bulky, rounded column shaped arm supports suggest a late 20s - 30s dating.
Maker can make a huge difference in price-- look for labels/ maker stamps on your chairs.
