I acquired this amphora from an aunt who gave it to me a couple years ago. At first I thought it was a very odd and not attractive piece, but there was just something about it that held my attention in spite of that. The piece just kept growing on me. Eventually I thought to look at the bottom and did a Google search to discover it's worth and value.

4-5-2012; Updated the photos at the suggestion of someone who knows amphora better then I do! Thanks!

You have a fabulous Amphora (Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel) wasp vase. What a nice auntie! Thank goodness you held onto it and didn't give it away for a song. You can see a few of mine posted on Collector's Weekly. You can also search YouTube for "Amphora Pottery" to see a video that has two of them and also visit the Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/amphora.pottery. I collect Amphora and am plugged into the collector's network. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Thank you so much for commenting. I only recently learned of this website and have several things to post to it for "Show and Tell".

      Hello Moonmooring,
I notice that the first two photos you posted are of the back side of the vase. I call it the back because the flowers don't have the same amount of gold application as the other side. Amphora did this on the wasp vases and on the flowers of the Veiled Lady portrait vases. I guess they figured there was a front and back and the back required less embellishment. When photographing a main shot of the vase or a close up of the flowers it will look nicer if you use the side with the full gold application. Just a suggestion.

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. It never occurred to me there would be a difference and I don't really have a developed eye when it comes to viewing things like this.

I acquired this piece from the aunt and I thought it rather gaudy at first. It grew on my after a while and it occurred to me it might be special. I did a cursory search online and came to realize it is a collectible! I was surprised. No idea where she got it, she wasn't a collector of anything of value except this.

I'll post some other photos but it may be a week or more before I can get to it.

Updated two of the photos showing the detail better. Thanks for the suggestion!
