Can anyone give me more information about my inkstand? What is the approximate value? Who is the manufacturer etc.? It has a glass ball reservoir and ink is gravity fed to a smaller glass reservoir in front. The base is cast iron and has raised leaf design. The hinged brass lid says Patd Dec 11 1855. Thank you.

Funny. I just saw this piece on Antique road show. It's an ink well, and a conversation piece. You put the ink in the globe, and watch the ink go down. They said around $50 ( I think) You may be able to find it on their web site
Found it!

I guess you have to of seen it to know which ones they are talking about. Here it is..
APPRAISER: It's really evocative of the mid-19th-century America. It's made out of cast iron. Okay. You can see that leaf form, and then there's that wonderful blown, clear-glass globe, which is probably why the bottle dealer had it. So you'd fill up the globe with ink, and then as you used it, the level of the ink would go down, and it was sort of a curiosity. I would say, um, probably the value on that is about $200 or so.
The inkwell is close's patent no 13902
rxguy, Guy is right a patent was issued to Charles T Close of New York City patent number 13,902 on Dec 11, 1855 for a Fountain-Inkstand. The patent was not assigned to any manufacture at that time.
