PITT PETRI GERMAN EXPRESSIONISTIC CERAMIC FIGURAL ASHTRAY
Up for auction is a colorful, expressive 1930s German figural ceramic ash tray and match holder from the store Pitt Petri in Buffalo, NY (store designed by Czech-American architect Antonin Raymond). Terracotta ceramics were made in Germany during the 1920s-30s exclusively for Pitt Petri. Stylistically the work is very similar to work by the Austrian Wiener Werkstatte. The Pitt Petri store still exists and continues to sell high-end ceramic and glass wares.
The ashtray marked Pitt Petri, Made in Germany , the Pitt Petri Crane logo and the designers initials WR .
The figure is 5¼ inches high, 5¾ inches across and 4½ inches long. It is in very good original condition. T are some glaze chips or misses, it is difficult to tell. This wonderful piece would be a great addition to a 20th century modernist ceramic collection.
