I purchased this item on ebay. It was advertised as a Chatelaine. But I am not certain. It is gold 2 1/2 inches in length with an 8 inch chain and interesting clasp at the end of the chain. No makers marks, but beautiful detailing on the head of the pin plus the twisted centers of the pin shafts.
My passion is hatpins, but I love this little pin? Can anyone out there tell me for certain what era, maybe the maker, and use of this pin? I don't understand the chain if it was a hairpin? My mystery will be solved with all you experts again. Thanks so much. blingiton1948

Could it be a security chain to safeguard the gold hairpin from getting lost if it falls out? I could imagine it getting fastened to a veil or a hat.

It is actually a Victorian hair pin or otherwise referred to as pince nez hair pin. They were attached to the "pince nez" eyeglasses (translation: pinched nose as the wire eyeglasses were secured in place by pinching your nose) More than likely gold filled or gold, Have sold a few myself to brides that have worn them in their hair as they are so pretty.
