This is the exterior of the Camelback Martin Meijer trunk I posted earlier. I obtained this from the attic of a friend when she sold the house which had been in her family since the early 1900's. I know it needs some work, but I don't want to ruin it, so I hope to pick up some tips from others. It seems to have a leather-like exterior with metal bands. I have more pictures, but I don't have them scanned in yet.

Hello, I really like your trunk. It looks like it has tooled leather covering, which was often on the better trunks of this type. The cast metal slat bumper clamps on your trunk were patented in 1870. From the style and other hardware I expect this trunk was made in the early 1870's. But I could tell better if you can add some good pictures including the front, front latches, and the interior. Does your trunk have a label inside, or how do you know it's a Martin Maier trunk from Detroit? The leather can be treated with a good polishing with mink oil polish or other good leather preservative polish (paste type) and then cleaned and buffed with a soft cloth or shoe brush. I've done this on several of my leather trunks and it's worked well to preserve the leather. I hope to see more pictures of your trunk. Thanks. Marvin Miller ThisOldTrunk.com

I took more pictures, but they are posted under, "Beautiful Interior Camelback trunk". I also have pictures of the front with a good view of the lock and the exterior covering, but I don't know how to post the pictures on this site.
Thanks for your help. I have been a bit discouraged when trying to find out more about trunks. I know that the refinished exteriors are popular, but i like to keep things in original condition if at all possible.

Would really like to see what you did with early and outstanding MM trunk.
