W.H. Howell Co., Cast Iron Table, 1931

One of the furniture pieces I have in my house is this cast iron table made by the W.H. Howell Co.. This table was a wedding gift for my Great Uncle and Aunt on their wedding day in 1931. There is not a lot of information on this table nor were their any examples I could find online, but I did find some information on the Howell company based out of St. Charles, Illinois. The W.H. Howell Foundry was established in Geneva in 1867 and produced cast iron door stops, sad irons, and fluting irons. By the 1920s electric irons were coming into vogue and the company changed its product line to include wrought iron furniture. Howell Company chrome-plated tubular furniture was featured at the 1933 Century of Progress World’s Fair in Chicago. The Howell Company continued to produce the popular tubular furniture when it moved its operation to the former Cable Piano Company factory site in St. Charles in 1937. This table is one of my favorites pieces in my house, and the glass top is removable. There are actually two glass iron tops that must have come with the table, and I do have the alternate top.
