My grandfather gave me this watch in the early 1960's. I can't recall what history he cited back then. The watch has a timer and an alarm that I assume is associate with the game of cricket.
I had the watch cleaned and repaired by an elderly watch maker in the 90'
s (he was in his late 90's!) The watch works and I'd like to know more about it.

I can't open the back to reveal the works easily. The back cover hinges open and reveals what appears to be a blue steel disc that amplifies an alarm (some sort of timer)
Whether it's a cricket or grasshopper is hard for me to tell - both have similar appearances to my untrained eye.

I'm in Maine. The watch has a timer - I can't remember how to make it work and am unsure if the timer still works. The sound the alarm made was sort of a chirping sound like a cricket would make. The back cover opens 90 degrees, the inside of the back cover has a much smaller insect embossed in the center. The watch back has six bullet shaped openings (piercings) and six smaller, round ones to allow the sound out of the watch. I'll try to post a picture later today.
Post pictures of all the details you described above. It will be hard to identify or date the watch without seeing the works. You might want to take it to a watch repair person so they can open it for you if you can't open it.
It is definitely a grasshopper. The short antenna, long wings and very large back legs are good identifiers. Crickets have shorter back legs, they use their front legs to make their chirping noise. The grasshopper uses it's large back legs to produce it's chirping noise. Hope that helps. :)

I doubt it will at least not the asking price. I'm very pleased to have some information - 1890, 15 jewel, the double acting winder. For the first time in years I could hear the alarm. I've been looking online for years and have never found any information on the watch, so it's a real treat to finally learn a little more about it.
