The can was used to dispense bulk oil.Should be a small metal marker in the neck to indicate a 5 gallon measure. The cans were filled and delivered to stations then poured into 'hi boys" or oil dispensers.

thank you Virginia.vintage and Hawkike! good info! was there a cover for this or are they open?
    4. hawkike hawkike, 7 years ago
The lid would go inside the opening and lock with a partial turn.

Ho2 ,they were hauled in the back of this, and filled out of it-
      http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/118235-1926-mack-ac-fuel-tanker-revell-model?in=user
and filled this at the gas station-

      which filled this-

and that filled the crankcase of a car!
      hope this helps!

Of all the one I have seen, including the Standard Oil of California that I have are galvanized and not painted. http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/37351-standard-oil-co-can

That said I do like some of the paint jobs collectors put on these.
