ok hello trying to find out as much as i can about this doll. bought it about 6 months back at a thrift store for about $2.00 this is what outfit he had on. the head picture says: copy r 1070 1002( hard to make out the numbers clearly) oringinal appalachian art works,inc manufactured by coleco ind, inc has the number 22 in big numbers and a very tiny 3 next to it. on bottom where the siguratur is the number 84 which if i understand correctly is the year it was created. the last picture shows the tag that was and is on the side of the doll. would love to hear any info on this cabbage patch. working on making him a new outfit.
Authentic cabbage patch doll (baby or also called newborn. not in original clothes and their name was on birth certificate when bought. these were a craze in 80's . Made and sold millions. there are also copycats not signed like yours.not much value in today's market and collectors want mint in box. not sure what else you need to know. if you like him or her is most important :-)
Manikin, thank you for your response. don't care about the money value since do not want to sell him...was just curious about the history of the doll itself. so are you saying it could be an authentic cabbage patch doll that is cool more interested in knowing if you know what his name was when made and that kind of info. thanks ....i bought it when is saw it because i love to crochet and make doll clothes and thought this could be a new venue for me...i make doll clothes for 18 inch dolls so thought why not cabbage patch dolls... when i bought him i bought another that is a 25th anniversary edition doll. signed but no date except it says 25th on it. when reading up on them they were made from the oringinal dolls that wee sold but its an anniversary model if that makes sense.
Coleco in 1982, which changed the name of Roberts' doll line to Cabbage Patch Kids. The Coleco toy version of Roberts' artworks were smaller in size (16 inches) and had vinyl, rather than fabric, heads. The "adoption fees" for the mass-produced toys were usually less than $30, and each doll came with a "birth certificate" with a unique name and birth date. The name would have been on his birth certificate . But since he signed Xavier Roberts he is a original . The first ones made had soft cloth faces and are less common to find They were called "Little people "
Manikin, yes i found that article interesting on here also...would have loved to see one of his original "Little People" found one on here that looks a lot like him only different clothes(not sure if the clothes mine has are original or not) and i think someone said that one was named Rueben Burton or something like it. i wish they had a web site that would give you all that kind of info especially now that the internet is so much easier to find stuff on...like i said i found him at a thrift store to use as a model for clothes for the size that he preemie size i think because the other one i found that is the 25th anniversary special is a little larger than he is. thanks so much for helping me.
I have a few of the cabbage patch with the original design in my vaults. I do have some clothes for them if there is any interest.
